Just five games remain in MNUFC2’s 2026 MLS NEXT Pro regular season campaign, meaning every match from here on out will see the stakes get higher and higher. Your Twos are right in the mix for the final few playoff spots, but there’s still work to be done for them to secure a postseason berth. This weekend’s test against already-qualified Houston will test the cut of their sails, giving Head Coach Fanendo Adi and his squad all they can handle and more.
The Twos come into Sunday’s away tilt on the back of a 1-1 draw with North Texas, after which they lost the ensuing shootout for an extra point. That result saw the Black and Blue fall another point behind their playoff rivals, with North Texas sitting in ninth place on 33 points — two ahead of MNUFC2 on 31 points. The top eight teams from each conference advance to the postseason, meaning the Twos will have to overtake at least two of the teams ahead of them to book their ticket. San Jose is currently tied with North Texas on 33 points, occupying eighth place and remaining well within touching distance of MNUFC2.
The next test may very well prove to be the most difficult one left in their path, with third-placed Houston playing host. Dynamo 2 have averaged over two points a game this season, a benchmark that traditionally denotes a successful season. This will be the third meeting between these sides in 2026, but undoubtedly the most important of the year. Game one ended in a 1-1 draw, after which Houston won the shootout. Game two was an emphatic 4-0 win for Dynamo 2, flexing their conference-leading attack.
This time around, the Loons will likely be without leading scorer Marcus Caldeira, who has firmly claimed his spot on the first team in recent weeks. Instead, the likes of Darius Randell, Luke Hille, and Troy Putt will have to step up to shoulder the goal-scoring burden, while Nick Dang and Jack Clarkson look to organize the backline to avoid a repeat of that 4-0 game in early July.
Houston enters this match in mixed form, with two straight draws against St. Louis and San Jose. They’ve seemingly tailed off toward the back-end of the season, but their scoring threat remains a serious problem for your playoff-hopeful Loons, making this one of the most important matches remaining in the MNUFC2 calendar.
