Tonight’s road trip ended in disappointment for your Loons, as Minnesota United fell to St. Louis CITY by a score of 4-2. Despite an early lead, a few key changes to the lineup saw the Black and Blue struggle to cope with the league’s most in-form team, as the hosts stormed back to show why they’ve been able to put together their current 15-game unbeaten run in league play. 

Head Coach Cameron Knowles was forced to take defender Morris Duggan out of the lineup due to injury, ending Duggan’s perfect record of playing every MLS minute in 2026. Jefferson Diaz was also taken out of the starting backline, as Nicolás Romero and Carlos Harvey slotted in to flank Michael Boxall instead. Owen Gene stepped back into holding midfield alongside Wil Trapp, and Marcus Caldeira was sidelined due to a light ankle injury, prompting Coach Knowles to go back to his double attacking midfield of Joaquín Pereyra and Tomás Chancalay. 

Early on, it became clear that St. Louis was going to dominate the ball, as the Loons sat back like they did against Dallas last weekend. After three saves in the first four minutes from Drake Callender, the visitors capitalized on their first real opportunity of the game, when Pereyra’s inch-perfect pass found Chancalay’s equally well-timed run behind. Chancalay’s immaculate first touch set him up for success, outrunning his chasing defenders and curling a right-footed finish around Roman Bürki for the fifth-minute lead. 

The hosts picked right back up where they left off, though, dominating the ball and moving across the pitch with urgency and precision. Some excellent effort from both of MNUFC’s attacking midfielders saw them frustrate the opponents at odd intervals, but for the most part, CITY was moving at will. They found the equalizer in the 18th minute, when Callender saved a shot from distance, only to see the rebound fired back in. Just four minutes later, an impressive curling finish from Carlo Holse found the upper corner of the net to give the hosts the lead. 

With the lead and the momentum, St. Louis continued to push, establishing a high line of confrontation and squeezing the Loons in their own half. They managed to double their lead before the half, as Rafael Navarro’s deft touch found its way over the outstretched hands of Callender. While the visitors responded by pressing higher, they ultimately couldn’t recover any ground before the halftime whistle.

The second 45 began with St. Louis dominating once again, but the Loons’ aggressive defensive approach produced more than one nervy moment for their hosts. A few close calls from Pereyra gave his side hope that they might find their footing, only for that momentum to be halted by a penalty kick awarded to St. Louis in the 56th minute. Navarro earned the kick and buried it, bringing the deficit up to three. 

In ironic fashion, the Loons marched down to the other end of the pitch, where Kelvin Yeboah’s footwork on the endline saw him dance past his man and draw a foul of his own. He stepped up to the spot to convert his 13th goal of the season, bringing him up to five goals in his last five games and once again giving the visitors a lifeline. 

From there, scattered chances and increasingly frequent fouls gave the game a very stop-start feel, keeping the Loons from finding the consistent rhythm they needed to fully get back into it. A flurry of subs in the 75th minute provided a brief bout of energy, leading to a chance from Jefferson Diaz clanging off the underside of the St. Louis crossbar. While that sparked some fire in the Black and Blue, their hope was swiftly dampened by Kyle Duncan’s second yellow of the night, sending them down to 10 men and suspending their starting right wingback for their next match. 

Though they mustered a few half-chances before the end, the Loons were ultimately unable to find anything of substance in the closing moments tonight. They’ll likely leave St. Louis with a bad taste in their mouths, having shown that they could compete with one of the league’s hottest teams, only to fall on fine margins after giving up an early lead. Now, with Michael Boxall missing the next match for yellow card accumulation alongside Duncan, next Saturday’s home match against the LA Galaxy will require fresh faces to step up to help the Loons get out of their rut.
