In a blockbuster trade with our wonderful MNUFC social media admin, I have acquired some compelling Marcus Caldeira stats, a new word in my vocabulary, and a storyline idea worth reading a few times over. All I had to give in exchange was either a dozen mediocre post captions, or one really good one. The jury’s still out on what I’m bringing to the table, but that’s neither here nor there.

In case you aren’t a volcano enthusiast, let me fill you in on what I’ve learned. A caldeira is a large, cauldron-like hollow that forms when a volcano collapses inward after emptying its magma chamber during a major eruption. It’s also a striker that plays for Minnesota United. And they’re both heating up.

To clarify, this article is Marcus Caldeira, MNUFC’s 2026 breakout forward. Not a volcanic crater. 

By now, you all know I’m a stat-loving, soccer-obsessed writer who occasionally picks up on some intriguing trends. Today’s Storylines article is all about the rather obvious upward trend in Marcus Caldeira’s professional development, making this one heck of a LinkedIn-worthy repost for the young striker (I’ll expect a shoutout, of course). So, let’s dive into some of the stats, paint the picture, and get (just a little) carried away while we dissect the underlying numbers behind his debut season in Black and Blue. 

The NEXT Pro

First, the groundwork. Caldeira was selected by MNUFC with the 20th pick in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, becoming the first West Virginia player to ever be selected in the first round. Just a sophomore at the time, the young Canadian forward opted to return to school for another year, allowing him to continue his education and development while MNUFC retained his MLS player rights. Put simply, no other MLS team could sign Caldeira without going through the Loons first. 

After yet another impressive college season saw him rack up awards and recognition in 2025, Caldeira officially joined MNUFC ahead of the 2026 season, signing a first-team deal and beginning his life as a Loon by earning his way into the pecking order. His first minutes came with the second team, where he opened his account with a hat trick in the very first game of the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro season, earning MLS NEXT Pro Player of the Matchweek Honors right off the bat. Not a bad start. 

From there, Caldeira’s prolific goal scoring ability never really slowed down. In 1,343 minutes with MNUFC2, he managed to score 10 goals — including two hat tricks — add three assists, and average a goal contribution (goal or assist) every 103 minutes. His last game with the Twos was back in June, and since then, he’s made himself into not just a first-team regular, but one of the first names on the teamsheet. 

This Kid is Major

Since making the jump to first-team soccer, Caldeira has been on an absolute tear. A few substitute appearances in Leagues Cup led to a breakout appearance against Atlante in the final Phase One game, where he provided Joaquín Pereyra with two assists in the Loons’ first home win since April. That performance translated into more league-minutes, culminating in his first start for the first team against Atlanta United. 

While he didn’t score in that start, he’s worked his way firmly into the lineup, starting all but one of the next six games. His first top-level goal came against San Jose in a rampant 5-1 win, when he thundered a shot into the top-netting at the near post. From there, he’s found the back of the net five times in a total of just 443 minutes, giving him an average of a goal just about every 90 minutes. If you add his assist to the tally, he’s got a goal contribution every 73 minutes, an even better rate than he was managing in MLS NEXT Pro. 

Between MNUFC2 and MNUFC proper, Caldeira has played 24 games in 2026, tallying a total of 1,786 minutes. His 15 goals and 6 assists in all competitions give him a goal contribution every 85 minutes, meaning that if he’s playing in a match, it’s not only common to see a goal, it’s a statistical eventuality. 

With emphatic finishes at the near post, impressive headers to finish off balls over the top, and a true poacher’s finish here and there, Caldeira has demonstrated a natural inclination to the movement and art of playing striker in MLS, taking to the league like a Loon to water. He’s outperformed his 3.36 expected goals, riding a wave of impressive form and proving that his instincts and skillset not only translate to the highest level, but allow him to thrive. Regardless of where the season goes from here, Caldeira will have something to say about it before the final whistle is blown.
